Evan, renowned for his skill in developing and executing brand growth strategies, had acquired the auction house Antiquorum in 2008 in a deal that was worth USD 30 million.
Over the next decade, the company’s auction sales grew from USD 37 million to USD 90 million and Evan’s role was critical in cementing Antiquorum‘s status as the largest watch auction house in the world.
During this period, Antiquorum had successfully sold several highly valuable timepieces including Mahatma Gandhi‘s pocket watch for just under USD 2.1 million, iconic actor Steve McQueen‘s Rolex Submariner for USD 234,000 (which was more than 20 times its estimate, and a new world record for its reference), and Albert Einstein’s Longines wristwatch for USD 596,000 (which was more than 2000% of its estimate).
In 2018, after making an initial minority investment in Antiquorum‘s European operations, a Zurich-based private equity firm called FIDES Business Partner acquired the auction house from Evan for USD 154 million. This amount was 5 times greater than the sum Evan had paid to acquire the auction house nearly a decade back.
Soon after the sale of the company, he embarked on a world tour that included countries such as Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, China, India, South Africa, and the Philippines.
In 2021, his foundation, the Zimmermann Family Charitable Trust, donated USD 3 million to the University of California to support initiatives that focused on the causes and consequences of the Holocaust. The fund was also meant to support the study of human rights, protection of minority rights, and reparation mechanisms for historical wrongs and injustices.
